Blow out Preventer (BOP) (API 16A)

Integrated’s OEM API 16A Monogrammed blow out preventer (BOPs) are used to contain wellbore pressure for onshore, inlandwaters & offshore (above water line) environments in the Workover, Snubbing and Drilling applications.

Blow out preventer were developed to cope with extreme erratic pressures and uncontrolled flow (formation kick) emanating from a well reservoir during drilling. Kicks can lead to a potentially catastrophic event known as a blowout. In addition to controlling the downhole (occurring in the drilled hole) pressure and the flow of oil and gas, blowout preventers are intended to prevent tubing (e.g. drill pipe and well casing), tools and drilling fluid from being blown out of the wellbore (also known as bore hole, the hole leading to the reservoir) when a blowout threatens.

Blow out preventer are critical to the safety of crew, rig (the equipment system used to drill a wellbore) and environment, and to the monitoring and maintenance of well integrity; thus blowout preventers are intended to provide fail-safety to the systems that include them.  The term BOP is used in oilfield vernacular to refer to blowout preventers. The abbreviated term preventer, usually prefaced by a type (e.g. ram preventer), is used to refer to a single blow out preventer unit.

A blowout preventer may also simply be referred to by its type (e.g. ram or annular). The terms blow out preventer, blow out preventer stack and blowout preventer system are commonly used interchangeably and in a general manner to describe an assembly of several stacked blowout preventers of varying type and function, as well as auxiliary components.

A typical subsea deepwater blow out preventer system includes components such as electrical and hydraulic lines, control pods, hydraulic accumulators, test valve, kill and choke lines and valves, riser joint, hydraulic connectors, and a support frame.

Blow out Preventer Parts (BOP)

An essential piece of machinery in the oil and gas sector is the blow out preventer (BOP) system, which is made up of a number of components, including a Ram Blowout Preventer, an Annular Blowout Preventer, a Pulsation dampener, Valves, Spare parts, and a Choke & Kill Manifold, all of which work together to ensure the safety and control of high-pressure wells.

Ram Blowout Preventer (RBOP) (API 16A):

A Ram Blowout Preventer (RBOP) is a safety tool used during the drilling, workover and snubbing operation to control well bore pressure in oilfield operation. The RBOP achieves this pressure control by closing its rams to seal around drilling / workover tubulars, an open hole or to shear drilling tubulars under various drilling conditions.  During normal drilling, the RBOP has little or no internal pressure.

However, if the drill bit penetrates a high-pressure oil or gas pocket in the well, the BOP rams can be closed so that the high pressure returning well fluid (whose pressure has overcome the weight of the drilling mud) will not blow out of the well.

The RBOP is normally composed of a pressure containing body with a vertical through bore with doors (including door operators) on both side, which hold the BOP rams and their hydraulic operating mechanisms.  Flanged or studded API connections is configured on either end of the body at the vertical bore to facilitate connecting the preventer (s) to a BOP stack or other well control components.

The body is generally configured with two outlets (one on each side) under each ram cavity located 90o to the doors, which are routed laterally through the body to the vertical bore forming a well bore fluid outlet path.  The side outlets are used in conjunction with the choke and kill valves, choke manifold and other well control equipment to bring the high well bore pressure under control using a variety of well control techniques available to the well operator.

Annular Blowout Preventer (ABOP) (API 16A):

An Annular Blowout Preventer (ABOP) can close around the drill string, casing, or a non-cylindrical object.  Drill pipe including the larger-diameter tool joints (threaded connectors) can be “stripped” (i.e., moved vertically while pressure is contained below) through an annular preventer by careful control of the hydraulic closing pressure.

Annular Blowout Preventers (ABOP) are also effective at maintaining a seal around the drillpipe even as it rotates during drilling. Regulations typically require that an ABOP be able to completely close a wellbore, but annular preventers are generally not as effective as ram preventers in maintaining a seal on an open hole. ABOPs are typically located at the top of a BOP stack, with one or two ABOP positioned above a series of several ram preventers.

An ABOP uses the principle of a wedge to shut in the wellbore. It has a donut-like rubber seal, known as an elastomeric packing unit, reinforced with steel ribs. The packing unit is situated in the ABOP housing between the head and hydraulic piston. When the piston is actuated, its upward thrust forces the packing unit to constrict, like a sphincter, sealing the annulus or open-hole. ABOP have only two moving parts, piston and packing unit, making them simple and easy to maintain relative to ram preventers.

PULSATION DAMPENER (PD) (ASME U):

Pulsation Dampeners (PD) are devices installed at the discharge side of reciprocating positive displacement pumps. They enhance hydraulic system performance and extend a pump service life by controlling pressure and flow variations.  The reciprocating nature of positive displacement pumps creates pulsations or pressure gaps that may damage the entire pump system over time. Pressure gaps can also result from the opening and closing of pump check valves.

Pulsation Dampeners act much like the shock absorbers on a car, dampening the resulting hydraulic shocks and minimizing pipe rattle and pressure fluctuations. A solid Pulsation Dampener will reduce the energy present in the pumped media, increasing the effectiveness of additional tools used in the system. By minimizing shock and excess movement, pulsation dampeners reduce system components’ damage, particularly pipe welds and supports. The result is an increase in pump efficiency, safety, reliability, and decreased downtime, maintenance, and operating costs.

All pulsation dampeners utilize one of two methods for mitigating energy produced by reciprocating pumps: compression or exchange. The traditional gas-charged dampeners use a compressible gas cushion, either by a gas over liquid or gas-filled diaphragms, bladders, or cartridge. As the reciprocating pump produces pressure spikes, the gas compresses, thus absorbing the pressure difference and smoothing the pumped media flow.

Valves (FC, IFC™, DrilFLO™ & IFRAC™ - Slab Gate Design | AceFLO – Expanding Gate Design) (API 6A):

API 6A Gate Valves offer highest level of standard and valve to gas and oil application. Gate Valve has optimized flow path and right selection of trim style for longer life and performance. The one-piece Slab Gate is field-replaceable and offers the control device with complete bidirectional sealing capacity at low and high pressure.  Gate Valves is a unique wellhead valve used in oilfields and made to manage flow stream.

Gate Valves are generally used as a part of oilfield tool, which jobs under high pressure, such as wellhead assembly, Christmas tree, choke manifold, frac trees, debris catcher, line heater, kill manifold, etc. Gate Valve is used during well testing, flowback, oil generation. Gate Valve is either running manually or by hydraulic actuator.

SPARE PARTS:

BOP Ram Blocks, are of five common types: Blind (CSO), Pipe, Variable and Shear Blind.

Pipe Rams close around a drill pipe, restricting flow in the annulus (ring-shaped space between concentric objects) between the outside of the drill pipe and the wellbore, but do not obstruct flow within the drill pipe. Variable-bore pipe rams can accommodate tubing in a wider range of outside diameters than standard pipe rams, but typically with some loss of pressure capacity and longevity. A pipe ram should not be closed if there is no pipe in the hole.

Blind Rams (also known as sealing rams), which have no openings for tubing, can close off the well when the well does not contain a drill string or other tubing, and seal it.

Variable Bore Rams accommodate tubing in a wider range of outside diameters than standard pipe rams.

Shear Blind Rams are designed to shear the pipe in the well and seal the wellbore simultaneously. It has steel blades to shear the pipe and seals to seal the annulus after shearing the pipe.  Blind Shear Ram (also known as shear seal rams or sealing shear rams) are intended to seal a wellbore, even when the bore is occupied by a drill string, by cutting through the drill string as the rams close off the well. The upper portion of the severed drill string is freed from the ram, while the lower portion may be crimped and the “fish tail” captured to hang the drill string off the BOP.

CHOKE & KILL MANIFOLDS (API 6A):

Choke Manifold is an arrangement of piping and valves with adjustable choke valves. This assembly is primarily responsible for controlling flows and pressures in various industrial applications, such as onshore and offshore well testing and production operations. By implementing a choke manifold, operators and asset owners can adjust the flows and pressures that enter processing equipment, thus controlling production and minimizing equipment damage.

The most important element of the choke manifold is the assembly of choke valves. These valves are designed specifically to restrict flow when needed (hence the term choke). By adjusting these valves as needed, flows can be regulated as required.
