


In the high-stakes world of oil and gas drilling, well control is non-negotiable. The Critical Role of RAM BOP Elastomers

When a RAM BOP is activated, two massive steel blocks (rams) are hydraulically driven toward the center of the wellbore. But steel against steel—or steel against drill pipe—cannot create a fluid-tight seal on its own. That is where Elastomers come in.

Top Seals: Securing the Upper Gap
While the front packer seals the center of the wellbore, well fluids will naturally try to find the path of least resistance. Without a proper secondary seal, high-pressure fluids would simply bypass the closed rams by flowing over the top of the ram block. This is where the top seal comes into play.
The top seal is a specialized strip of Elastomer embedded into the top face of the ram block. When the rams are in a closed position, the wellbore pressure pushing up from below actually lifts the ram block slightly. This upward force compresses the top seal against the upper interior wall (the bonnet or cavity roof) of the BOP body.
Because the top seal relies on wellbore pressure to energize, its design is highly precise. The final piece of the BOP Elastomer puzzle is the door seal. RAM BOPs are designed with heavy doors or bonnets on either side, which are open to allow rig crews to change out the ram blocks (e.g., swapping from a pipe ram to a blind ram) based on the service program.
When these heavy steel doors are closed and bolted shut, the door seals provide the static barrier between the internal BOP cavity and the outside atmosphere. Unlike front packers and top seals, which are dynamic and move with the rams, door seals remain stationary. However, they are still subjected to the full internal pressure of the well during a kick. A failure of a door seal would result in a major pressure loss through the side of the BOP.
