INTEGRATED® BLOWOUT PREVENTERS

INTEGRATED® Blowout Preventers (BOPS)

Understanding Blowout Preventers:

In the high-stakes environment of oil and gas drilling, safety and pressure control are paramount. BOPs were developed to cope with extreme, erratic pressures and uncontrolled flow, commonly known as a “formation kick” emanating from a well reservoir during drilling operations. If left unchecked, these kicks can lead to a potentially catastrophic event known as a blowout.

In addition to controlling downhole pressure (which occurs within the drilled hole) and managing the flow of oil and gas, blowout preventers are engineered to prevent tubing, drill pipes, well casings, tools, and drilling fluid from being violently expelled from the wellbore when a blowout threatens. They are critical to the safety of the crew, the rig (the equipment system used to drill the wellbore), and the surrounding environment. By monitoring and maintaining well integrity, blowout preventers provide an essential fail-safe for the entire drilling system.

The abbreviated term “preventer,” typically prefaced by its specific type (such as a ram preventer or annular preventer), refers to a single unit. However, the terms blowout preventer, blowout preventer stack, and blowout preventer system are often used interchangeably to describe an assembly of several stacked preventers of varying types and functions, alongside their auxiliary components. A comprehensive system includes electrical and hydraulic lines, control pods, hydraulic accumulators, test valves, kill and choke lines, riser joints, hydraulic connectors, and a robust support frame.

An essential piece of machinery in the oil and gas sector, a complete BOP system generally consists of a Ram Blowout Preventer, an Annular Blowout Preventer, specialized valves, and a Choke & Kill Manifold. Together, these components work seamlessly to ensure the total safety and control of high-pressure wells.

INTEGRATED® OEM API 16A Monogrammed BOPs

When operating onshore, inland water, or above-water offshore environments, equipment reliability is non-negotiable. INTEGRATED’s OEM API 16A Monogrammed Blowout Preventers are purpose-built to contain wellbore pressure across Workover, Snubbing, and Drilling applications.

Our lineup focuses heavily on the two most critical types of preventers in the industry: Ram Blowout Preventers (RBOP) and Annular Blowout Preventers (ABOP).

RAM BLOWOUT PREVENTER (RBOP)

A Ram Blowout Preventer is a heavy-duty safety tool used to control wellbore pressure by closing its internal “rams” to seal around drilling or workover tubulars, close off an open hole, or even shear drilling tubulars in extreme emergencies.

During normal drilling, the RBOP experiences little to no internal pressure. However, should the drill bit strike a high-pressure oil or gas pocket, the BOP rams are rapidly closed. This prevents the high-pressure well fluid—which has overcome the hydrostatic weight of the drilling mud—from escaping.

The typical RBOP consists of a pressure-containing body featuring a vertical through-bore. It is equipped with side doors that house the BOP rams and their hydraulic operating mechanisms. Flanged or studded API connections at both ends of the vertical bore allow the unit to connect seamlessly to a BOP stack. Additionally, the body is engineered with lateral side outlets located 90° to the doors. Used in conjunction with choke and kill valves, these outlets allow well operators to safely bleed off pressure and bring the well back under control.

We offer highly specialized RBOP models tailored to different operational footprints and pressure requirements.

ANNULAR BLOWOUT PREVENTERS (ABOP)

Unlike ram preventers that use dual opposing blocks, an Annular Blowout Preventer (ABOP) uses a wedge principle to close completely around the drill string, casing, or even non-cylindrical objects. By carefully controlling hydraulic closing pressure, drill pipe and large-diameter tool joints can be safely “stripped” (moved vertically while maintaining pressure containment) through the preventer.

ABOPs are highly effective at maintaining a seal around drill pipe even while it rotates. Positioned typically at the top of a BOP stack above a series of ram preventers. The core component is an elastomeric packing unit (element) reinforced with steel inserts. When hydraulic fluid actuates the piston, the upward thrust forces this packing unit to constrict and seal the annulus or open hole. With only two primary moving parts (the piston and the packing unit), ABOPs are simple, robust, and easy to maintain.

Our annular preventers are designed for versatility, capable of closing on almost any shape or size of tubing, wireline, or completely sealing off the open bore.
